Well one cold night we found ourselves still hungry after dinner, and really wanting some dessert. We scoured every cabinet and came up empty, and desperate. We had already made the grocery run for the week. I hunted the web for some ideas about what we could make quickly from whatever we had in the house and voila! A recipe for chocolate-fried-bread. A few shavings of semisweet chocolate between two slices of stale sandwich loaf bread, followed by a quick fry in a pat of butter on the stove and voila again! Something that looked not-great but tasted like a warm chocolate croissant...well,it did to us and we were pleased with our rescue-dessert. I shared this story with my friends, laughing as I did, and then realized they looked at me with some horror. WHAT??? Fried stale bread and chocolate??? Hmm, perhaps my memory of it was more romantic in my own mind.
Fast forward to this past week when, what do I see on Yahoo front page but(drum roll): a recipe for fried-bread-and-chocolate!!! Now ours did not look quite so gourmet and we did not use any sea salt, and we did not call it a "chocolate sandwich". But the idea was the same. Ours looked more like this one whose recipe you can find on RealSimple.com, but with a whole lot less chocolate and many more burn marks.
